Department Skating Fun

On Sunday, November 29th the Department booked the Clare Drake arena and hosted it’s first skating event.  This event was in memory of Rick Poirier, a lab tech who passed away last year.  Everyone was invited out to have some fun no matter their skating level.  The hockey players took over one end of the ice for a pick up game, the rest of us took over the other end to practice our skills and just have a good time.  Kelly brought her kids and they were thrilled to share the ice with so many adults.  Judit put on skates for the first time in years and even managed to join the hockey game for a bit.  And the most amazing part of the day was Biplab.

Biplab put on skates for the first time ever and bravely hit the ice.  He had so many people trying to help him and provide advice we were amazed he didn’t tell everyone to get lost.  Biplab went from barely being able to stand to skating across the arena, definitely the fastest learner we have ever seen.  He can now call himself a true Canuck.

And in true Canadian fashion the party had to move from the ice to the pub.  It’s hard to say which was more fun, the skating or the beer drinking!
